Core Thesis
Traditional financial giants aren’t merely “attacking” public blockchains — they are directly colonizing the entire ecosystem. Tether, Circle, Coinbase, JPMorgan, BlackRock, and others are no longer content to parasitize Ethereum, Solana, or Tron. They are rapidly building or migrating to self-controlled chains, stablecoin-native chains, or permissioned networks, trillions of stablecoin transactions, RWA tokenization, and institutional settlements will all be trapped within their own “public chain” ecosystems. The demise of leading public chains won’t happen suddenly; rather, it will involve a permanent loss of users, value, and developers. In the end, only 1-2 chains will remain, functioning as “digital museums”.
Key Evidence (March 2026 Realities)
- Institutions Are Already Building Walls
Circle’s Arc: Stablecoin-native L1, now in public testnet (March 2026 data: testnet highly active), mainnet advancing. Uses USDC as gas, sub-second settlement, institutional-grade privacy/compliance focus, deep integration with CCTP and Gateway — aiming to become the “Economic Operating System.”
Tether’s Plasma: Mainnet beta launched September 2025 (Bitfinex-backed), supports zero-fee USDT transfers + Paymaster, expanding in 2026 (e.g., NEAR Intents integration), with stablecoin TVL growing rapidly.
JPMorgan’s JPM Coin (JPMD): Expanded to Base (Coinbase L2), phased native deployment to Canton Network (Goldman Sachs, BNP Paribas joint privacy chain) starting January 2026, processing over $10B daily, institutional settlement ecosystem accelerating.
Others: Societe Generale euro stablecoin, AllUnity, etc., launching in parallel.
→ These aren’t new public chains — they are vertically integrated private/semi-permissioned infrastructures. Once regulation solidifies further (CLARITY Act, MiCA, GENIUS framework), anonymous/high-fee public chains face systemic displacement.
- C-End Users Were Never Truly Owned by Public Chains
Current daily active users (DAU) highly concentrated:
Tron ≈ 3.2M DAU (leading for 10 straight months, stablecoin transfers dominant)
BNB Chain ≈ 2.6–4.4M DAU (volatile, driven by meme/payment/exchange ecosystem)
Solana ≈ 2.1–3.9M DAU (early 2026 peak high, recent pullback)
But most are meme traders, low-fee transfers, stablecoin remittances — essentially parasites on low-cost chains. Once Tether/Circle/banks migrate USDT/USDC to their own chains (zero fees + compliance), this traffic evaporates instantly.
TON is a rare exception (Telegram’s near-1B user base), but on-chain DAU remains low (~70–80K, with 2026 forecasts of 2.6M but poor actual conversion), experience still weak.
- Public Chain Economic Model Has Already Failed
Public chains rely on transaction fees for survival, but the paradox is clear: lower fees attract more users (Solana/Tron monthly revenue $20–26M), but pennies per tx can’t cover billions in security costs; higher fees (e.g., Ethereum L1) drive retail away, leaving only institutional/RWA large-value settlement.
Value capture broken: application layer (DeFi, meme, Agents) captures most fees; L2/apps divert base-layer traffic. Solana’s February 2026 stablecoin transfer volume hit a record $650B (surpassing Ethereum + Tron combined), but much is “noise” trading — once institutional chains dominate, public chains become mute infrastructure.
Exception: Ethereum as the “root of credit” (trust anchor for third-party token issuance) remains irreplaceable — humanity needs a credit root, and that is its core moat.
- AI + Open Source Make Chain-Building Threshold Zero
Any investment bank or big tech can fork an EVM-compatible chain in ~100 hours (AI-assisted), then layer on their own users/compliance moats for rapid deployment. Public chains’ “decentralized trust” advantage is crushed by “centralized efficiency + transparent ledger”. Web2-style “transparent centralization” is the future: ledger public, control still in institutional hands.
The “Survival” Path for Public Chains
Ultimately only 1–2 remain:
- Ethereum (settlement layer + credit root, hard to kill)
- TON (if Telegram truly pushes 100M+ users on-chain, it might survive)
The rest (Solana, Tron, Sui, ADA, etc.) face long-term diversion of users/liquidity/developers, with token prices shifting from “narrative premium” to “slow depreciation.”
Real Opportunity Lies in the Application Layer
Valuation logic has changed: focus on projects with cash flow, user stickiness, and real RWA landing (DeFi protocols, payment apps, AI Agent platforms), not base layers. Crypto increasingly resembles “stocks” — pick applications with moats, not infrastructure plays.
Anti-Traditional Conclusion
2026 is not the “golden continuation” of public chains — it is the “year of institutional harvest”. The utopian dream of open public blockchains is being crushed by the reality of compliance, efficiency, and user monopoly.
Wake up — value has already migrated upstream (applications) and downstream (institutional chains). Continuing to all-in Layer 1 will only make you a historical punchline. Unless public chains transform into next-gen infrastructure for “AI + embodied intelligence + dedicated scenarios,” most are destined to become relics.
