Introducing “The Future”: How Stock Valuation Thinking Reshapes the Imagination of Antique Financialization

Zhu Weisha, January 8, 2026

I. The Source of High Growth Potential: “Treasure Hunting” and Narrative Reshaping

When antiques transcend their role as collectibles and become tradable financial assets, a new valuation framework is required. In the article “Redefining the Valuation Metrics for Antiques“, the author proposed three pillars for antique financialization: natural appreciation, liquidity premium, and growth potential. The first two have been discussed in “From the Treasury Phenomenon to Antique Dividends” and “How Liquidity Adds Value to Antiques” respectively. This article focuses on the third and most imaginative pillar: growth potential.

“Buying stocks is buying the future”—its essence is betting on the endogenous, creative growth of a company. Antiques are different; their physical form is enduring, and their value growth stems from the expansion of external demand, which is driven by “narrative” and consensus. The unique advantage of antiques lies in their profound cultural heritage attribute, which gives their “story” infinite potential for continuous excavation and reinterpretation. Each key academic discovery or successful narrative dissemination can become a catalyst for a leap in value.

Taking the Mona Lisa as an example, if its artistic narrative stagnates, its financial attributes would become closer to gold, maintaining value through symbolic status and limited ticket revenue (similar to a utility stock). In contrast, the “high growth potential” in the antique market is rooted in “treasure hunting”—that is, relying on exceptional discernment and knowledge to discover and validate value that the market has underestimated. This encompasses two levels:

  • Authenticity Discrimination: Believing in authenticity when the market is universal skeptical and ultimately gaining recognition.
  • Value Reassessment: On the basis of confirming authenticity, uncovering unrecognized historical, artistic, or craftsmanship characteristics, thereby defining new heights of value.

Therefore, the “growth potential” of an antique is a dynamic process of value discovery and consensus reshaping. Its characteristic of coexisting high risk and high potential return does bear some resemblance to investing in growth stocks. However, it must be acknowledged that this kind of “growth” is more event-driven and involves subjective game, requiring the support of long-term capital to smooth out volatility.

II. Case Study: The Three-Tiered Value Ascension Map of the “Hong Kong Nine Ding”

In the article “Possibly One of China’s Most Valuable Antiques“, the author used the “Hong Kong Nine Ding” as a sample to practice this valuation thinking. Its value can be clearly divided into three stages based on the upgrading of its “growth narrative”:

Tier 1: Conservative Valuation as a Top-Tier Bronze Vessel Set (the “Hong Kong Nine Ding”)

At this stage, it is viewed merely as a precious set of bronze vessels with a history of about three thousand years. The primary valuation method is market comparison.

  • Valuation of the Artifacts Themselves: The No. 2 Ding of the Nine Ding coincidentally has a comparable counterpart—a Western Zhou dynasty Marquis Ding housed in the Luoyang Museum. This Ding has identical length and height dimensions to the No. 2 Ding (Marquis Ding) of the Hong Kong set, with only a 1.4 cm difference in width. This museum is a National First-Class Cultural Relics Museum. The Luoyang Ding is one of the museum’s top ten treasure hallmarks. Using the Luoyang Ding (without inscriptions) as a reference to set a conservative valuation benchmark, and considering that the No. 2 Ding of the “Hong Kong Nine Ding” bears inscriptions, valuations ranging from 120 million to 2.5 million RMB were assigned to the individual Dings, resulting in a total estimated value for the set of approximately 347.5 million RMB. For detailed valuation, refer to the article “Redefining the Valuation Metrics for Antiques“.
  • Intangible Asset Valuation: The idiom “one’s word carries the weight of nine Dings” is well-known to everyone. The profound cultural influence of the Nine Ding, continue for over three thousand years, constitutes a massive intangible asset that cannot be replicated by short-term massive capital investment. This is tentatively quantified here as 500 million RMB.
  • Growth Potential Valuation: Considering the potential for narrative upgrade due to authenticity and authoritative authentication, a doubling of value is reserved for this aspect. Combining the above, the conservative valuation at this first tier could exceed $200 million USD.

This valuation is not high. For comparison, the Qing Dynasty Qianlong Famille-Rose ‘Auspicious Omens’ Revolving Vase sold for approximately 554 million RMB at Bainbridges auction house in London in 2010. This estimate has not yet fully accounted for the premium for a complete set (often 20%-50% in auction markets). Some believe that as a set of cultural relics, the value of the Nine Ding could more than double.

Tier 2: Valuation Reconstruction as a Key Historical Artifact (the “King of Zhou’s Nine Ding”)

The expert appraisal meeting in November 2025 (conclusions see “Expert Panel Appraisal Conclusion on the Hong Kong Nine Ding Being the King of Zhou’s Nine Ding“) brought a decisive leap to its story. Experts presented academic opinions on-site, stating that “through on-site testing and instrument-based dating, it was confirmed that the Hong Kong Nine Ding was produced in 1026 BC, confirming that the King of Zhou’s Nine Ding is not the legendary ‘Yu the Great’s Nine Ding’, but the Hong Kong Nine Ding we see today.” Its frame of reference consequently elevates to the level of top tier human civilization treasures.

  • Benchmarking against the Mona Lisa: The Nine Ding are not inferior in terms of historical gravitas, craftsmanship uniqueness, and scarcity. Moreover, they possess a potential liquidity premium through financialization that the Mona Lisa lacks.
  • Valuation Anchoring: Referring to AI’s theoretical valuation for the Mona Lisa ($8 billion to $50 billion USD) and considering the natural growth law of antiques, anchoring the valuation of the “King of Zhou’s Nine Ding” above $2 billion USD constitutes a reasonable inference. This significant value growth is primarily driven by the paradigm shift in “narrative” and “consensus”, its ultimate realization awaits market validation and will be influenced by global economic and collecting trends.
Tier 3: The Ultimate Imagination as a Civilizational Landmark (the “Chinese National Treasure Nine Ding”)

If the identity of the “King of Zhou’s Nine Ding” gains widespread consensus within the archaeological community, its significance would transcend the artifact itself, becoming a key piece of evidence potentially capable of rewriting early Chinese History of Civilization. The continuously research and global cultural discourse it would trigger would constitute a self-reinforcing “super-narrative”. At this point, it would truly approach the category of a “priceless treasure”.

As there is no precedent for the financialization of such an antique, its ultimate valuation model awaits practical testing. Unlike the physical homogeneity of gold or the on-chain native nature of Bitcoin, the value of an antique like the Nine Ding extremely relies on the ultimate offline physical verification and the continuous maintenance of its online narrative, which constitutes its unique and complex dual foundation for financialization. Its valuation methods should reference and complement those used for gold and Bitcoin.

The referenced benchmarks, gold and Bitcoin, are both asset classes at the trillions of dollars level. If the “King of Zhou’s Nine Ding” could serve as an anchoring asset and possess the potential to generate cash flow through specific financial structures (see the article “From the Treasury Phenomenon to Antique Dividends“), then functionally, it might surpass a pure store-of-value asset, pioneer a new paradigm for alternative assets. This corresponds to yet another breakthrough in the imagination of human financial practice.

III. Conclusion and Outlook: The Logic of a New Market’s Birth

This article aims to argue that introducing the “buying the future” stock thinking into antique financialization is not a simple concept apply, but a beneficial attempt to construct a new valuation paradigm. It structures and makes analyzable the process of antique value discovery through the dimension of “growth potential”.

The fundamental difference lies in this: corporate growth is endogenous creation, while antique “growth” is exogenous discovery. Precisely because of this, the essence of antique financialization investment lies in identifying targets where there exists a huge “cognitive gap” and “space for consensus elevation” in their narrative. The case of the “Hong Kong Nine Ding” perfectly deduction the ascension path from a top-tier artwork to a historical landmark, and then to a civilizational symbol, with each leap accompanied by exponential value growth.

This is an unprecedented race track. Past attempts at cultural artifact trading have mostly not succeeded, primarily because they failed to achieve true financial positioning. Now, leveraging RWA and blockchain technologies, and drawing on the experience of mature capital markets, of course, the realization of this path depends not only on technological and financial model innovation but will also face challenges such as the legal authentication and physical security of real-world assets being placed on-chain; the stability test of long-term narratives amidst short-term market fluctuations, which requires price discovery algorithmic mechanisms; and the need to discuss different regulatory frameworks for mostly antique on-chain. In subsequent articles, I will further express opinion on these matters. With the gradual resolution of these issues, an antique financial market comparable in scale to the stock market could very well be born. It requires a leaderhood demonstration effect. We anticipate that the “King of Zhou’s Nine Ding” can become the “Bitcoin” of antique financialization, enable a brand new financial revolution concerning value storage and discovery.
