I. Remarks
The “Nine Ding” are the most symbolic bronze heavy vessels of ancient China. Legend traces their origins to the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties. Evolving over millennia, they became a symbol of royal power and the unification of the realm. The Zhou Son of Heaven cast the Nine Ding signifying “Virtue Matches Heaven and Earth, Rites Govern All Directions.” The patterns carved on the Ding embody the principles of heaven, earth, and humanity, showcasing the ritual and musical spirit of Huaxia civilization.
Three thousand years of bronze precipitation, countless national treasures vie for brilliance, yet only the Nine Ding shine uniquely through ancient and modern times, their fame enduring. The Zhou Son of Heaven’s Nine Ding represent the inheritance of royal authority.
“Yiyan Jiuding” (A Word is as Weighty as the Nine Ding signifies being as good as one’s word, reflecting the millennia-old ritual and musical culture of the Huaxia land.
“Juding Bashan” (Lifting the Ding and Pulling Up Mountains) embodies soaring ambition and the continuation of the thousand-year civilization and culture of the Huaxia nation.
Within the Ding inscriptions lurks the aura of the Spring and Autumn period; between the Ding legs flows the time of the Qin and Han dynasties; past the Ding ears brushes the fashion of the glorious Tang. Precisely as the saying goes:
The rites and music of the Three Dynasties cast the inscriptions; the patterns secretly conceal the sun and moon’s cycle.
The King of Chu inquired about the Ding, recognizing its weight; the Zhou house cast the Ding, emphasizing virtue.
The Nine Ding, the nation’s treasured heavy vessels, noble and illustrious, once the treasure guarding the state, now reappear in Hong Kong!
If you have not yet had the opportunity to witness the elegance of the Nine Ding, we invite you to come to Hong Kong to appreciate them together and jointly witness the source of civilization.

The Hong Kong Nine Ding are not damaged or incomplete; they are well preserved. The Nine Ding are inscribed with the characters “Zhou Wang Gong Du”. Currently, only slightly over 40 inscribed characters on the Hong Kong Nine Ding are faintly visible, while more than 100 characters remain covered by patina.
Are these the Hong Kong Nine Ding, the legendary Zhou King’s Nine Ding? The mystery remains unsolved to this day. Only after the secrets of the remaining inscriptions are revealed can we get a clear picture. Having been immersed in the long corridor of history for thousands of years, the Hong Kong Nine Ding now reappear in Hong Kong, attracting global connoisseurs to unravel historical mysteries.
III. The National Treasure Hong Kong Nine Ding and Extant Nine Ding in China
The Hubei Zeng Hou Yi Museum has nine round ding. The Nine Ding in the Palace Museum are replicas. The Baoji Museum also possesses a set of nine ding, but they are three-legged round ding. Therefore, the Hong Kong Nine Ding are the world’s only set of rectangular four-legged ranked ding inscribed with “Zhou Wang Gong Du”, used by the Zhou Son of Heaven as ritual vessels.
In the Zhou Rites, the ranked ding system emerged, clearly stipulating the use of ding for different social strata. For instance, the Son of Heaven used nine ding, feudal lords used seven ding, ministers and high officials used five ding, etc. The ding became a symbol of rank and power.
Another characteristic of ranked ding is their orderly size gradation. The contemporaneous Siyang Square Zun set also consists of nine vessels in a ranked set with orderly sizes.
