The concept of the Internet: relationship, node, kinetic energy, potential energy, network relationship

After the previous article, “How does cryptocurrency understand the concept of community?” was published, some readers wanted me to explain Internet concepts such as social networking. It is a fundamental concept that I didn’t want to introduce. My research methods all start from basic concepts, just like my research on blockchain, which began with Satoshi Nakamoto. The most basic idea of the Internet is a relationship, which is also the starting point of my research. The following is based on my past reading notes.

1. Interpersonal relationship:

According to interpersonal relationships, there are eight types of relationships: no relationship, one-way relationship, one-time relationship, weak relationship (light relationship), acquaintance relationship, friend relationship, and intimate relationship.

No relationship: People we meet on the street are unrelated and are called strangers.

One-way relationships refer to broadcast-type relationships. They are perceptible relationships of one-way communication. However, they bring the possibility of establishing a two-way relationship for us in the future. Attention is a one-way relationship, which is recognition and includes trust. One-way relationships are very subtle, and it is not easy to maintain them for a long time. For example, the relationship between Internet celebrities and fans. Of course, some one-way relationships can be upgraded to two-way relationships.

External relationships

This includes no relationships, one-way relationships, one-time relationships, and weak relationships (light relationships). External relationships are called public domain relationships, also called stranger relationships.

Internal relationships

This includes weak relationships (light relationships), acquaintance relationships, friend relationships, and intimate relationships. WeChat treats weak relationships as internal relationships, which are also called private domain relationships. Weak relationships span public domain and private domain relationships.

There is no precise measurement indicator for the extent of weak relationships. For example, WeChat has weak public domain relationships, while Facebook’s public domain relationships are more robust, and YouTube is a pure public domain product. Therefore, weak relationships are classified into two categories.

From weak to intimate relationships, the degree of trust is enhanced, which is a process from no trust to relative trust and then to absolute trust.

Trust is generated by identifying ideas, character, ability, and status, and its establishment is long-term.

Everyone’s absolute trust circle includes friend relationships and intimate relationships. The number of people is between 5 and 100. Relative trust circles include weak relationships and acquaintance relationships, with 100 to 5,000 people. This is a hurdle that most people cannot break through. According to Zhang Xiaolong, only nearly 1 million of the 1 billion WeChat users have reached or approached 5,000 friends.

2. Benefits relationship

This is another way to divide relationships: they are divided into non-benefits relationships, relationships that can be converted into benefits, short-term benefits relationships, and long-term benefits relationships. Benefits relationships are one of the critical factors that promote changes in interpersonal relationships and are the driving force that ultimately transforms into the accumulation of trust.

Benefits relationships are kinetic energy, and trust relationships are potential energy. Kinetic energy and potential energy can be converted into each other.

Compared with acquaintance relationships, stranger relationships are more benefits-related. To put it nicely, it is called satisfying user needs, which is to give him benefits and hit the pain points.

3. Time relationship

There is a fixed-time and variable-time relationship. In a fixed period, there may be many people, while in another period, there are almost no people. It is significant to find that the relationship between people flow and time differs for different products. The most commonly used variable time is fragmented. The product content that matches fragmented time is mostly leisure content, which must be short.

All application tools are for three purposes: improving work efficiency and saving time, increasing the amount of information per unit of time, and making it easier to obtain information, all to occupy disposable time. Whether the application is successful determines the improvement in the above three aspects.

4. Spatial relationship

Node: measured by the number and strength of relationships.

According to the user, it is divided into personal nodes and platform nodes. According to the nature of the connection, it is divided into natural and automatic nodes.

Potential energy: an intangible ability that can be converted into kinetic energy. Generally, it includes popularity, reputation, position energy, etc., to generate trust.

Kinetic energy is driven by benefits, including money and the ability to command money.

kinetic energy node: This has kinetic and potential energy that exceeds ordinary people’s. It is measurable in the Internet era. For example, KOLs, such as Big V, have several fans representing their potential energy, and their kinetic energy is wealth and the ability to mobilize wealth. Of course, the strong node relationship, the circle of friends, is also one of the measurement indicators. The circle of friends is also potential energy.

Since Internet customers are wealthy, influence represents potential energy and the ability to convert it into kinetic energy. Using attention to define influence, it is clear that Musk’s influence is greater than that of Barack Obama and singer Justin Bieber. Musk’s endorsement of Dogecoin is worth up to $280 billion. The influence of a team or platform is more straightforward to measure, which is the head effect.

The Internet builds weak relationships

The Internet expands personal relationships, but it also weakens relationships, which are not easy or impossible to establish in the industrial age.


ToB platforms are for third parties, and ToC platforms are for end users. User platforms have the characteristics of thousands of faces. There is also an ecological platform, which is a hybrid of toB and ToC platforms. WeChat is an ecological platform, and the goal of chainless is an ecological platform. The platform is similar to a square, a gathering place for people and a node of relationships.


The logic behind attention is demand. Money is the greatest unified demand of humanity.In addition, spiritual needs such as interests, values, and culture should not be underestimated.

6. Internet social networking

Public-domain social networking has failed

Social networking means social interaction, which is different from the interaction between family members and close friends and contains strong public domain characteristics. Using the Internet to achieve social interaction naturally starts from the public domain, such as the BBS forum. With the emergence of mobile phones and instant messaging, private-domain social interaction has been gradually expanded to public-domain social interaction. For example, the emergence of groups has a unified will, replacing the discussion of topics. The product features are rich and easy to use. Ultimately, it defeated the unprogressive public domain social interaction such as forums. Nowadays, computers are an auxiliary function of social products, but mobile phones have become the protagonists.

Does the track of stranger social software exist? Countless failed public domain social products, such as Soul, Toilet MT, Duoshan, and Chatbao, tried to “encircle” WeChat. To fight back, Tencent launched Cat, Light Chat, Youji, etc.. Do we still remember them today? The public domain is a much larger market than the private domain. Why are there no heavy social products in the public domain except for the success of shallow social products such as YouTube and TikTok?

My conclusion

The scenario of public social networking does exist, and the market demands making friends with strangers. Still, it should be noted that this demand is scenario-driven.  Cryptocurrency has a real demand scenario. Obviously, there is an ample opportunity here.


We are developing private chat software that uses a Web3 structure and does not store private chat data. The download speed is still slow, and the ease of use cannot be compared with WeChat. The product starts from the private domain. Currently, the private domain function is incomplete, and the goal of creating a community product suitable for cryptocurrency is still far from being achieved.
